Importing Dogs into New Zealand
This page explains the action that must be taken in order to import a dog into New Zealand and the subsequent registration requirements.
Before you import a dog or any other animal into New Zealand, you must first obtain written approval of the Ministry for Primary Industries.
Imported dogs must be registered
Dogs that have been imported into New Zealand must be registered with Council as soon as practical after their release from quarantine.
The registration process in these cases is the same as for any other new dog registration.
You will also require Ministry for Primary Industries certification that your dog has been correctly imported and has passed all quarantine requirements.
You will need to pay dog registration fees, pro-rated to the relevant month. You may also apply for Responsible Owner status for the following registration year. If you own more than two dogs, you can apply for a Dispensation Licence.
