Dogs Barking, Stray, Nuisance
This page sets out what you can do about barking dogs, stray dogs or dogs causing a nuisance.
Dog owners must prevent their dogs from creating a nuisance
Dog owners must ensure their dog does not create a nuisance, whether by barking or howling, straying or wandering away from their home property, or attacking or lunging at passers-by, vehicles or birds or other animals.
Report dog nuisances to Council
Report dog nuisances promptly to Council’s Customer Service Centre using our main phone number (04) 237 5089, 24 hours a day.
Nuisance dogs may be impounded
Council may impound dogs found wandering at large, or dogs found on private property that are not under the direct control of any person on that property, or that are not confined so as to prevent it leaving the property.
