Energy Efficiency and Conservation

This page provides information and links on how to achieve energy efficiency in homes and businesses in Porirua City.

New Zealand's electricity supply relies primarily on a national generation grid based on dam water reserves supplemented by wind, gas, coal and diesel powered generators.

Increased energy use places greater demands on existing energy resources. It is therefore important we take all reasonable steps to conserve energy.

You can assist conservation and reduce your energy bill by adopting prudent energy saving practices such as installing energy-efficient light bulbs, turning off unused lights and appliances, installing insulation and curtains.

Sustainability Trust Programmes

The Sustainability Trust is currently delivering 2 programmes that benefit Porirua residents.

Warm Up NZ: Healthy Homes programme

The Sustainability Trust in partnership with EECA Warm Up NZ: Healthy Homes programme is able to offer insulation subsidies of up to 100% for Community Service Card Holders, or 60% for landlords where the main tenant has a Community Services Card (subject to certain conditions). Saving money and improving health are two good reasons to insulate your home.

Wellington Curtain Bank

Free curtains are available for Community Service Card holders. The Sustainability Trust runs the Wellington Curtain Bank. Please contact the Trust if you need fitted, lined curtains for your living room.
