Onsite Wastewater Systems (including Septic Tanks)

This page explains the legal situation requirements regarding onsite wastewater systems and their management (including septic tanks) and how Porirua City Council is working with property owners to ensure their systems comply with various legislations and are maintained.

Licensing Onsite Wastewater Systems

If you have an onsite wastewater system e.g. a septic tank, aerated wastewater treatment system, etc. it must be licensed. All onsite wastewater systems are required to have a management plan.  This plan will be incorporated into an onsite wastewater system licence, which may contain additional conditions if required..

Licensing process

1. Each individual system is required to have a separate application form completed.  You are able to download a copy from this site by clicking the link below, or you can collect an additional form from the Porirua City Council, Cobham Court, Porirua.

2. Help to complete filling out forms can be obtained from your systems' maintenance contractor or an authorised person.
