Rates Assessment Notices
This page describes the contents of the rates assessment notices for Porirua City ratepayers.
New Assessments and Invoices
You will receive one rates assessment at the start of the year that details the rates that are payable to your local Council, and another that details the rates that are payable to the Greater Wellington Regional Council for the year. These are for your information only and no payment is required on the assessment notice.
You will also receive 5 combined rates invoices throughout the year. The invoice will detail the amount you need to pay each period to avoid having a penalty added to your account.
The invoice will show how much is payable to Porirua City Council and to the Greater Wellington Regional Council. Porirua City Council will continue to collect rates on behalf of the Greater Wellington Regional Council.
Targeted rates replace the range of separate rates
These rates can be set on a uniform basis or differentially as a rate in the dollar on different categories of rateable land.
Content of the Rates Assessment Notice
The Rates Assessment Notice details the latest 3 year valuation of the property, and its rating category. See our Property Valuations page for an explanation of the valuation.
For each type of rate (General, Recycling, Sewerage etc.) the value of the rating factor is multiplied by the set rate for that category to determine the value of the rate applicable to the property. These are then totalled to set the total rates for the year.
For example, an urban residential property with a Capital Value of $300,000 would have a General rate calculated as 300,000 (the rating factor) x $0.0035597 = $1,067.91and Kerbside Recycling rate calculated as 1 x $18.60 = $18.60 in the 2012-13 rating year, plus other rates as applicable.
The Rating Information Database
The rating information database is available for you to view in May of each year.
This is a new database that provides all the information required to enable the public to calculate the liability for rates on a property.
The information made available to the public will not include any names or addresses of the owner(s) other than the street address of the property.
You can view the Rating Information Database at the Customer Services Centre in the Council office in Cobham Court, Porirua.
If you are the ratepayer for a property, or an authorised person, you can contact Council for other information such as amount of rates outstanding.
Authorised people include:
- a person who is authorised to view the records by the ratepayer,
- a person who has become liable to pay the rates,
- a solicitor, landbroker or real estate agent.
