Trash Palace offers a waste minimisation education programme for Porirua Schools
The Trash Palace Education Centre has developed a waste minimisation education programme specifically for schools and children. The teaching focuses on the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and the three key concepts of environmental education: sustainability, personal and social responsibility and interdependence.
A typical day schedule includes:
- A guided tour of Trash Palace
- Recycling discussions
- A choice of activity (covering art, social studies or science curriculum links)
Limited funded places in the Education Programme are available to Porirua Schools. The Programme is available to schools outside the Porirua area (subject to availability) but fees will apply.

Enviroschools is a national programme that supports schools to become sustainable
Enviroschools is a national programme that aims to create a whole school approach to environmental education. Schools are supported to become more sustainable and are rewarded when they reach a level of achievement.
There are currently 587 enviroschools nationally, including the following six Enviroschools in Porirua City: Glenview School, Katoa Kindergarten, Plimmerton School, Porirua School, Pukerua Bay School and Titahi Bay School.

The WasteWise Organics programme supports schools to start wormfarming
The WasteWise Organics Wormfarming Programme supports schools to start worm farms. Worm farming is a low maintenance fun way of turning waste food scraps and paper into a sweet smelling high quality plant food.

The O-I Environmental Fund has money available for school environmental projects
O-I New Zealand (glass recyclers) annually makes available $25,000 for school environmental projects.
