Porirua’s fresh water supply is managed by Wellington Water.
Wellington Water is owned by the Porirua, Hutt, Upper Hutt and Wellington city councils and Greater Wellington Regional Council. The councils are all equal shareholders.
Wellington Water’s role is to manage the drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services for the councils.
Wellington Water has three sources of drinking water; the Hutt River, the combined flow of the Wainuiomata and Orongorongo rivers and the Waiwhetu Aquifer - a natural underground reservoir that’s fed by river-water filtered through the ground.
Water sampling and testing is carried out in accordance with the Ministry of Health’s Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand. These standards set out the sampling rate for the population served and the tests that must be carried out on all samples. About 5,700 samples at nearly 500 sites across the four cities are carried out each year.
See Wellington Water’s “Drinking Water” page for information about water quality, treatment and testing.
