Refugee Trauma Recovery

Who are we?

We are a non-governmental organisation offering confidential and free services to former refugees and their families in Wellington.

What do we do?

We provide specialist mental health services for those who have experienced trauma and torture, and deliver capacity building for their families and community.

Former refugees may have endured or been exposed to organised violence, torture, harassment, imprisonment, war conditions and civil unrest, escapes, refugee camp life, exile and migration. People who have been tortured or traumatised may carry the effects of these experiences for many years. Our organization exists to help these people settle into their new life in New Zealand.

How can we help you?

To speak with someone to begin this process of recovery, call 04 805 0350. Refugee Trauma Recovery provides screening, assessment, treatment/therapy, and onward referral, including:

  • The ability to talk in confidence with someone who has an understanding of the issues involved in the refugee and exile experience
  • Medical reviews by a consultant psychiatrist
  • Coordination of services from other agencies, such as general practitioners, mental health workers, and support workers
  • General assistance with adaptation to life in New Zealand.
  • Eclectic treatment methods include CBT, Gestalt and narrative therapies, problem solving, EMDR and other client-centred approaches tailored to their individual needs.
