Porirua is a city of pizzazz. It has just over 54,500 residents surrounding the Harbour and Pauatahanui Inlet (a Department of Conservation Significant Natural Area) and is also surrounded by a rolling rural hinterland.
Twenty minutes' drive north along SH1 from the Capital of New Zealand - Wellington City, we enjoy the best of both worlds: Wellington's CBD's bustling cultural, dining and shopping experiences and Porirua's family friendly environment and warmer climate all at a more relaxed pace with a variety of lifestyle choices.
Great work-life balance
Porirua offers the sort of work-life balance so many people are looking for these days. Porirua residents can have the high powered job whether in Wellington City or in Porirua itself and still be home by 5.30pm for dinner with the family.
And Porirua is a great place to raise a family. With relatively minor traffic congestion, children can walk or bike safely to school, parks and sports fields. Families can enjoy our numerous reserves, walkways, cycleways, parks and playgrounds, not to mention water sports on the Harbour and Inlet and the 54kms of coastline. Our beaches cater for all activities from safe family fun, to rock hopping, windsurfing, surfing and swimming. We have four boating clubs and a Marina.
The CBD’s large, established retail centre includes North City Shopping Centre and the MegaCentre and caters to the needs of all family members - it's easy to get to with free parking.
Great activities and attractions
The city boasts the region's newest and among its largest, sports and events centres – Te Rauparaha Arena – catering for expos, national and international sports fixtures, community events and concerts. Under the same roof is the very popular Arena Aquatic Centre, enjoyed by families from throughout the region as well as the state of the art Arena Fitness Centre.
Pataka Museum of Arts and Cultures is nationally and internationally renowned as one of New Zealand's premier galleries for Maori, Pacific and New Zealand Contemporary Art.
We have many family friendly cafes, with excellent coffee and plenty of room to park the pushchair or buggy, and a creative and a lively library network serving the needs and interests of the youngest to the oldest in our community.
If you are planning a trip to Porirua and are looking for accommodation, we have great motels and some world class B&Bs on the coast and in the countryside.
