Porirua Hospital Museum

"All that the historians give us are little oases in the desert of time, and we linger fondly in these, forgetting the vast tracks between one and another that were trodden by the weary generations of men."

- John Alfred Spender, The Comments of Bagshot

F Ward the only remaining block of the Porirua Mental Asylum

Porirua Hospital Museum is located within the oldest part of Porirua Hospital (the former F Ward). The Museum provides a great deal of information about the history of mental health care and the Porirua Hospital. The building has a very high heritage value and is a Category I historic place.

In December 2008 Porirua City Council granted $15,000 to the Porirua Hospital Museum & Resource Centre Trust for replacement of the roof of the Museum building and to repair some water damage. Funding was also made available from the Lotteries Commission and the fundraising efforts of the Porirua Hospital Museum & Resource Centre Trust.
