Porirua is prosperous - "Businesses flourish, innovation abounds, and people have quality jobs."

We are working towards a prosperous Porirua which has a vibrant business sector, a strong local economy and a wide range of employment opportunities for local people.  It would mean that Porirua businesses and enterprises having a reputation for creativity and excellence.  A growing local economy also helps to ensure people have sufficient income to meet their everyday needs.

Council contributes to making Porirua prosperous through its focus on revitalising the city centre; a Key Focus Area in the Council's Long Term Plan 2009-19.  In addition Council encourages and fosters economic development through its Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan.  It provides key economic and business information via an Economic Bulletin, promotes business support and services through partnerships with the Porirua Chamber of Commerce, Grow Wellington and others, and is involved in promoting employment and training opportunities through mechanisms such as the Local Employment Coordination Group.

There are many projects and activities that contribute to growing our prosperity.  Four examples are:

(1) City Image and Promotion

Porirua is promoted and recognised as a city of business, lifestyle choice, cultural, sporting and visitor destination.  The city's image is enhanced by world class facilities such as Pataka  Museum of Arts and Culture and Te Rauparaha Arena. Information on what Porirua has to offer is easy to access, for example through the Porirua City Council website and i-Site Visitor Information. The city's image has international exposure through competitions such as Liveable Communities and is enhanced through our Sister City relationships.

(2) City Centre Revitalisation

City Centre Revitalisation (CCR) is key to creating a more prosperous city.  Council is working with business, investors and the community to create a vibrant city centre that not only offers better shopping but strengthens the city's heart, social mix and our sense of place.  The CCR will provide opportunities for investment, a better range of jobs and encourage people living in the city centre to give it 24/7 activity. 

The focus of CCR for the next 5-10 years is on:

  • creating a public plaza beside the Porirua Stream with improved pedestrian space
  • connecting the streamside plaza to key parts of the city like North City Shopping Centre, Cobham Court and the harbour's edge
  • developing public spaces as the private sector invests in new development and business. 

Council has invested $18 million in funding over the next tenyears for the changes to infrastructure and public spaces in stage one of the project.

(3) Porirua Community Link - Work and Income

The aim of the Porirua Community Link is to improve the employment opportunities for local people by ensuring that a wide range of support services and programmes are available.  There are many government and non-governmental agencies that regularly base themselves at the Community Link, some of these include: Budget Services, Careers NZ, PHOs, IRD, Regional Public Health, Settlement Support and others.
