Carved pou unveiled and blessed on Pukerua Bay foreshore
A magnificent 6m high carved Pou Tangaroa (God of the Sea) has been unveiled and blessed on the Pukerua Bay foreshore.
About 100 people turned up at 5.45am for the dawn ceremony led by Ngati Toa in December 2012.
The pou was designed and carved by Pukerua Bay resident and Ngati Toa carver Hermann Salzmann, with the help of Ngati Toa carvers as required. It tells the story of the area’s marine reserve and the significance and history of the site at the end of Ocean Bay Parade.
"This is a great challenge for me and I'm quite proud to do it for the community," says Hermann.
Pukerua Bay Residents Association chair, Iain MacLean, says the pou represents the sense of guardianship the residents and Ngati Toa feel towards the bay, and will be connected to the heritage and environment trails the community is developing. "It expresses the community values that are the foundation of our village plan."
The work was carried out through the Village Planning Programme, at the request of the Pukerua Bay community, which signed off the pou design. A local resident also provided the design for the pou’s substantial foundation works.

New bus shelter for Pukerua Bay

Pukerua Bay has a new bus shelter between Wairaka Rd and Pukerua Bay Beach Rd on SH1.
The new glass shelter was installed during December 2011, just south of the old blue concrete shelter, which has now been removed. At the same time the section of footpath around it, from Wairaka Rd and Beach Rd, has been developed into a 2.5m wide shared pathway.
The Vi Ebert garden leading up to the bus shelter is to be replanted by residents using plants grown at a nursery at the local primary school. No date has yet been set for that planting day.
The picture directly below shows the Vi Ebert garden and new bus shelter in April 2012. The picture below that shows a view of the Vi Ebert memorial plaque.

Muri station walkway creates better links for residents

Better access for residents
Pukerua Bay residents affected by the closure of Muri Rd railway station now have better access to the main Pukerua Bay railway station.
KiwiRail has decommissioned Muri Rd rail station for train stopping, but has allowed continued pedestrian access along the southbound platform.
The Muri Rd station platform has been fenced off and the pathway into Muri Rd reserve improved. This pathway links into pathways to the main Pukerua Bay station giving residents better day-time access across the village.
The work was carried out during December 2011 and January 2012.

Developing a walkway/cycleway
In the original village plan, Pukerua Bay residents identified problems with public access along and over State Highway One as a major issue. The community then worked with Council to develop a comprehensive Neighbourhood Accessibility Plan (NAP), which was submitted to the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).
The plan included the development of a walkway/cycleway through the village.
Porirua City Council is working with the New Zealand Transport Agency to design a package of work to develop a walkway/cycleway between the Pukerua Bay shops and the intersection of Hanui and Pukerua Bay Beach Rds.
The work will be done in two sections with a wider shared footpath built alongside SH1 from the shops to Wairaka Rd. And then the pathway extended from Wairaka Rd to the intersection of Haunui and Pukerua Bay Beach Rds.

Fixing the pedestrian overbridge
The Pukerua Bay pedestrian bridge (pictured below) has been given a new lease of life with an extensive programme of maintenance carried out during February and March 2011. Part of the work has involved completed replacing the eastern span of the bridge. This required SH1 to be closed overnight on March 29 so cranes could remove the old span and put in place the new. The road closure and detour through Pukerua Bay went very smoothly.
The bridge has since been repainted and garden beds at the foot of the bridge cleared ready for community planting.

The creation of a village plan for Pukerua Bay

New updated Village Plan for Pukerua Bay
Pukerua Bay has a new village Plan. The 2011 Pukerua Bay Village Plan was presented to by the Pukerua Bay Residents Association to the Council in October 2011.
The new plan builds on the first 2007 village plan, which has been a big success with many of the goals set by the community have been achieved.
The new plan is again based on a survey of residents which asked what they valued most about their community and how it could be improved.
The Village Plan sets out the resident's top priorities as:
- protecting our beach and marine environment
- making Pukerua Bay a safe place to walk and cycle
- dependable public transport
- a natural environment.

The Pukerua Bay Residents Association drove the development of the 2007 village plan with a survey of residents during 2006 to identify what they wanted to see happen in their community. This was supported through a series of public meetings and extensive community consultation.
The finding of the survey and feedback from community meetings was brought together in a village plan, which was presented to Council in 2007.
Through the village planning work the community identified serious problems with traffic and pedestrian access in and out of the village across State Highway One. These concerns were presented to the New Zealand Transport Authority in a comprehensive Neighbourhood Accessibility Plan. See below:
