Wastewater Bylaw Review
The wastewater bylaw is being reviewed. This bylaw enables the council to protect public health and safety and the environment, and provide effective and efficient wastewater infrastructure.
The bylaw also covers on-site wastewater systems (septic tanks, aerated systems and non-aerated systems.) It requires owners of on-site wastewater systems to have a wastewater system licence to ensure systems work efficiently and effectively. On-site wastewater systems which don’t work well pose substantial risks to human health and the environment.
Minor changes are proposed to simplify the language used, clarify some technical points and correct omissions in the current bylaw.
The wastewater bylaw does not cover trade waste, which is regulated under Part 20 Trade Waste, of the Porirua City Council General Bylaw 1991.
