On 19 April 2016 Associate Local Government Minister Louise Upston announced that the online voting trial proposed for this year’s local body elections will not proceed.
Porirua was one of eight councils which expressed an interest in trialling online voting for the coming Council elections. Extensive consultation was conducted, and hearings were held in May 2012.
For some time the demand has been growing for voters to cast their votes for local government elections online. Technology has now advanced to a stage where this is becoming a practical option.
With voter turn-out decreasing Porirua City Council believes it’s important to offer voting channels that reflect modern lifestyles, preferences and time pressures. Porirua is a young city with a high proportion of voters who relate to online communities. The ease, access and convenience of voting online not only benefits modern lifestyles but can also improve participation for overseas voters.
